Arlington
Stadium
Arlington Stadium
was home to the Texas Rangers until 1993. It was originally a
minor league ballpark (Turnpike Stadium) that was expanded for
the relocated Washington Senators.
An early picture
postcard view of the ballpark. Looking above the bleachers, which
were the largest in the majors during the park's existence, and
you see the scoreboard with a large outline of the state beyond
left field.
Another interior
view from the same time period.
In the lithograph
below, "Texas Twilight Heat" by Thomas
Kolendra, in addition to depicting a panoramic view of the ballpark,
you also see the only exterior landmark that could be observed,
the Marriott Hotel located beyond left field.
The site of Arlington
Stadium today. Another parking lot, as is the case with so many
former stadiums. There are no markers to pinpoint it's exact location.
According to
one of the parking lot attendants, this would be the general location
of the infield of Arlington Stadium, with the Ballpark in Arlington
off in the distance.
We returned to
the site of Arlington Stadium in September, 2004, determined to
locate the original location of the playing field. Using the "Texas
Twilight Heat" lithograph above as our frame of reference,
we concluded that we would be near 3rd base/ shallow left field
when the image below was taken.
