Comiskey
Park
Comiskey was
the first of the old ballparks to close it's doors in the 90's.
The park had clearly seen better days. Not having been there before
her last season, I am uncertain if the drabness was due to neglect
as her supporters have detailed, or if her time was really up.
As is often the case with baseball, this argument will go on as
long as people remember her.
The scoreboard
seems to dwarf the field. One of Comiskey's signature items was
the exploding centerfield scoreboard. There were several version
of it. The last one had a video screen. George Brett Is on deck,
and you can see new Comiskey through the openings at the top of
the upper deck, peeking through.
Here is an earlier
version of the scoreboard as seen in an old postcard. It is more
proportionate to its surroundings. Chesterfield cigarettes seemed
to have a monopoly on scoreboards in the 40's & 50's.
You don't have
to be a genius to figure out that seats in the new ballpark would
be much further away from the playing field than in old Comiskey.
The new park looks like one of the alien spaceships from the movie
Independence Day.
One last look
at her in all her glory. At this game, Bobby Thigpen set a new
American League single season save record (since broken).
Do not
go gentle into that good night.
