Exposition
Park
The home of the
Pittsburgh Pirates at the start of the last century, Exposition
Park is in the same general area as PNC Park, and the site of
the grounds was almost exactly occupied by Three Rivers Stadium.
As the marker indicates, the World Series was a best of nine affair
in those days. Interestingly, the park had a life span of only
a little over 20 years. (The Pittsburgh Federal League team occupied
the park after the Pirates left.)The team owner (Barney Dreyfuss)
wanted a new facility, in a better location. The more things change,
the more they stay the same.
There are very
few picture postcard images of Exposition Park. Most times, it
is only seen in the background of a more general, wide angle view
of the city, "The Point", etc. As can be seen in this
image, Exposition Park offered some of the open views that PNC
Park captures, and that were cut out by the enclosed stands of
Three Rivers Stadium.
