Kauffman
Stadium
Straight away
centerfield, and the plains of Missouri form the backdrop of Kauffman
Stadium. Universally regarded as the best of the symmetrical ballparks,
with the water spectacular, and crowned scoreboard as key design
elements, Kauffman Stadium bridged the gap between the multi purpose
cookie cutters of the 60-'s & 70's, and the domes that followed.
Another distinctive
feature of the ballpark is the sloping of the upper deck, which
results in the seating capacity being only a little over 40,000.
Another effect
of the sloping upper deck is that the seats at either end tend
not to be well lit resulting in a rather intimate setting for
a night game.
Stadium Drive
encircles the ballpark before you can get onto Interstate 70.
We see in the
postcard pictured below that the ballpark was originally called
Royal Stadium. It was renamed in 1993 for Ewing Kauffman, the
late, beloved, owner of the team. The one mistake in the design
of the ballpark was corrected with the removal of the artificial
turf in favor of natural grass for the 1995 season. Also missing
in the image above is the now obligatory video screen which was
added behind the left center field fence.
