Memorial
Stadium
Memorial Stadium
as seen in the following poor, pasted panoramic image from June,
1990, did not have any protective overhang above the upper deck.
Memorial Stadium,
as seen in this old postcard was a neighborhood park. There was
only a small parking lot, and it was not close to any major highway
or interstate.
The distinctive facade was dedicated to all those who lost their
lives in wartime service for our country. The style of the lettering
was, at the time, considered scandalous (i.e. communist) when
first seen in the 1950's.
The Inscription on the center facade reads:
ERECTED
BY THE
CITY OF BALTIMORE
1954
DEDICATED BY
THE MAYOR AND THE CITY COUNCIL
AND THE PEOPLE OF BALTIMORE CITY
IN THE STATE OF MARYLAND
AS A MEMORIAL TO ALL
WHO SO VALIANTLY FOUGHT
AND SERVED IN THE WORLD
WARS WITH ETERNAL
GRATITUDE TO THOSE WHO
MADE THE SUPREME
SACRIFICE TO PRESERVE
EQUALITY AND FREEDOM
THROUGHOUT THE WORLD
TIME WILL NOT DIM THE GLORY OF THEIR DEEDS.
A view from the
upper deck during her last season in a game against the Mariners.
Note the bucolic look beyond centerfield, rather than the traditional
urban landscape.
The light tower
behind the wall in right field was freestanding and definitely
evokes memories of bygone days with it's intricate lattice of
support beams.
Big crowd, late
innings, Seattle with runners on 1st & 3rd; Orioles looking
for a double play.
Fast forward
in time to September, 2000. Darkness on the edge of Memorial Stadium.
