The view of PNC
Park from the Roberto Clemente Bridge, over the Allegheny River,
as you approach from downtown Pittsburgh. The bridge is closed
to vehicular traffic prior to, during, and after Pirate games.
Honus Wagner
now stands in the batters box outside the main gate.
A young Willie
Stargell takes aim at a pitch in his familiar stance outside the
left field gate along a pedestrian promenade.
The view from
the lower deck during batting practice. Note that the trees and
bushes are off-centered toward left field. A better batter's backdrop
for the predominately right hand hitting Pirates?
A panoramic sweep
of PNC from behind the left field stands.
It seems hard
to believe that this is what Three Rivers Stadium could have opened
up to, as it's original design called for an open end, rather
than the enclosed circle that we came to know.
Though not marked,
it is 443 feet to the Allegheny River, down the right field line.
It seems that
with each passing year, the grass continues to be cut in more
varied patterns. I am unsure as to the need for this; as the pattern
can only be discerned from the upper deck.
Another upper
deck perspective, this time looking down the right field line.
As with all new
ballparks, the dugouts are rather deep. To view the game, you
have to stand by the railings, as the bench is no closer to the
field than the 4th row of seats!
